From Parade Grand Marshal to Halloween Witch, Audrey Spangler Makes Memorable Impression at Newhaven Court at Lindwood
GREENSBURG, Pa. – At 103 years old, Audrey Spangler remains active while bringing smiles to the faces of fellow residents and team members in the Newhaven Court at Lindwood senior living community.
“We all love Audrey. She is always so happy and cracking jokes,” said Carly Glasgow, LifeStages Director at Newhaven Court at Lindwood. “Her outgoing demeanor makes Audrey an inspiration to other residents and team members. She enjoys happy hour with her glass of wine. She loves milkshake Mondays, Bingo and our game when we help residents ‘travel’ to different countries each week through use of photographs and other visuals.”
Spangler became part of the Lindwood community last September and almost immediately made an impression as she donned a Halloween costume to dress up as a witch. She wore a black conical, pointy-tipped hat over a long orange wig. Her glasses matched the costume, and her curved-toe boots complemented the outfit perfectly.
Newhaven Court at Lindwood resident Audrey Spangler, 103, wore a Halloween witch costume last fall.
“Audrey dresses up for Halloween every year,” said Lori Grant, Executive Operations Officer at Newhaven Court at Lindwood. “She has fun with it and everyone enjoys interacting with her. She is fun to be around. As a 103-year-old who soon will turn 104, Audrey has a way of bringing a smile to the faces of all those around her.”
Spangler was born on August 17, 1920. She will celebrate her 104th birthday this summer. She said no one in her family had previously reached age 100. When asked what the key to a long and happy life is, she had a simple reply.
“Nothing special,” Spangler said. “Just don’t worry about things. Don’t worry. Be happy.”
Audrey and her late husband William Spangler married on June 28, 1941 in Latrobe. They were married until his death in 1960 and had two children — Garnet Snyder of Greensburg and Kevin Spangler of Latrobe.
Audrey Spangler spent most of her life in her hometown Latrobe until moving into a senior living community in 2015. Her career included time as a factory worker at Kennametal and Westinghouse, as well as roles as a waitress, and a home product demonstrator at Dutch Maid.
“Audrey has had such a wonderful and interesting life,” Glasgow said. “She even was named the grand marshal of the Fourth of July Parade in Latrobe last summer and had the same honor a few years ago to commemorate her 100th birthday.”
