Love, Laughter and New Beginnings: Independent Living at The Residence at Fitz Farm
From Exciting Outings, Social Events and Even a Heartwarming Wedding, Senior Living Community Redefines Independent Living
YORK, Pa. — At The Residence at Fitz Farm, Independent Living residents defy expectations.
Forget the outdated notions of senior living centered around bingo and knitting circles — this vibrant community offers so much more.
Residents indulge in taco and baked potato bars, explore local gems such as the South County Brewing Company or the York History Museum, and enjoy lunch outings at the popular Isaac’s Craft Brewery and Kitchen. They stretch and strengthen in yoga classes at the Fitness Center, take scenic country rides, and dance the night away at lively social events.
From food tastings to piano concerts, and even a wedding between two community members, life at Fitz Farm is anything but ordinary. Independent Living here isn’t just about comfort, it’s about adventure, connection, and making every day memorable.
“We had a wedding of two Independent Living residents who met at The Residence at Fitz Farm,” said Executive Operations Officer Charity Cruz. “That beautiful ceremony really said a lot about our community and how our Independent Living residents thrive in a vibrant setting.”
Mary Ann McCauley, 86, and Dave Malick, 82, married, as nearly 100 guests participated in the wedding ceremony held at Fitz Farm in late September. The senior living community team helped make the day memorable to the newlyweds, assisting with the menu and invitations.
“The couple met at Fitz Farm, which made the wedding so special,” said Suzanne Thrasher, Executive Director of Independent Living at The Residence at Fitz Farm. “Mary Ann and Dave’s family and friends, and even our residents attended. Our chef provided options for the hors d’oeuvres and menu items they could serve. Our residents helped set up the cupcakes and family members of residents participated. A photographer captured the moment. It was a very special event.”
The team at Fitz Farm enthusiastically rose to the occasion for their residents.
“Why hire a wedding planner when you have such great people here?” Thrasher asked, rhetorically. “We all put our minds together. Independent Living residents in our community meet great like-minded people who are active. The wedding ceremony was almost Hallmark-esque.”
The Independent Living lifestyle is about more than the milestone events such as a wedding. The seniors are active throughout a regular week, whether it’s gathering around a billiards table to shoot pool or checking out a matinee in the movie theater.
“We have people who play golf,” Thrasher said. “We have people who belong to the country club and go out. We have families come in. We’ve had so many choirs and carolers perform during the holiday season. We have different cultures come in to teach us about the culture that staff and coworkers grew up with. There are activity meetings, dining meetings. Everything we do is all resident driven.”
