Cardiologist Enlightens Senior Living Residents on heart-healthy habits, valve replacement innovations
GREENSBURG, Pa. – More than 30 residents of Newhaven Court at Lindwood gained valuable insight on healthy heart living during a presentation by Dr. Nevin Baker, an internal cardiologist at Independence Health System.
Dr. Baker visited the senior living community at 100 Freedom Way in Greensburg and fielded questions from residents during the presentation held in conjunction with National Heart Month.
“Dr. Baker’s presentation was really well received and provided important heart-related information to our residents and even several residents from other nearby senior living communities,” said Sara Bates, LifeStages Associate at Newhaven Court at Lindwood. “The residents asked a lot of great questions and Dr. Baker’s responses really hit home.”
Among the topics Dr. Baker addressed was the minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). He also discussed healthy heart habits such as the importance of exercise, a good diet and regularly monitoring blood pressure.

“This type of presentation is so valuable to the residents,” Bates said. “Healthy food choices and exercise, of course, are mainstays when it comes to good health. Our goal is to keep our residents living healthy to extend their life and to keep them happy.
“To bring in a cardiologist for this presentation is important,” she continued. “We want to engage the residents as well as show them ways they can prolong their life.”
Newhaven Court at Lindwood Executive Operations Officer Lori Grant said the Feb. 21 event provided the senior residents with important information about practices toward a healthy lifestyle as well as some options available to those considering heart valve replacement.
During his presentation, Dr. Baker stressed the importance of the seniors visiting their primary care physician or cardiologist for check-ups. He also addressed the attendees concerns during an informal question-and-answer setting.
“February is National Heart Month, which made it an opportune time to invite a cardiologist to our community. Dr. Nevin Baker discussed heart health and the new TAVR heart valve replacement,” Grant said. “Dr. Baker was very interesting and informative, especially when he showed how the TAVR procedure worked. We appreciated his time and the education he provided our residents on this important topic.”
