The Problem.
Panic. Fear. Confusion.
These are the thoughts and feelings racing through your mind when the social worker is asking you where mom is going in 48 hours upon discharge from the hospital or rehab because she is not safe to go home alone without 24 hour supervision. You are not ready to make that big decision, whether it is time for her to move out of her home altogether or not, but you also want to know she is safe while recovering.
The Solution.
Respite stays and therapy programs are a perfect solution for this scenario. IntegraCare communities like Newhaven Court at Lindwood offer respite programs with all inclusive services and amenities such as 3 meals a day in our restaurant style dining room, recreational and social programs, 24 hour staffing with a call pendant system, daily fitness and exercise class, and even events and outings all included for our short-term respite residents.
Additional Benefits of a Respite Stay include:
- Delaying having to make a long-term commitment
- Testing to see if your loved one likes the community
- Increased positive outcomes of the resident’s health because of access to regular therapy programs like Physical and Occupational therapies
After a hospital stay, it is not uncommon to be weaker from being in bed, or due to surgery or other medical procedures. In some cases, strengthening with the assistance of a Physical Therapist is all a resident may need. In others, learning to live differently with a resident’s new set of abilities requires an Occupational Therapist to help them through that process.
Continuing physical or occupational therapy during a respite stay has also proven to make a stay successful. Physical therapy a few days a week at a senior living community can continue to rehabilitate someone after surgery, improve one’s ambulation, transferring, and range of motion. Most people think just because their loved one has no injuries that they do not need therapy, however one can certainly benefit from it. Occupational therapy is often misunderstood and can help anyone in a new environment learn daily activities.
