Newhaven Court at Clearview Charity Event Supports Area Students, Teachers
BUTLER, Pa. — As a beautician and Resident Wellness Associate at Newhaven Court at Clearview, Leslie Ray has cut and styled senior living residents’ hair for the past three years.
“I absolutely love working with the residents,” Ray said. “I’m so happy when I finish and they say they look beautiful.”
As summer winds down, Ray will welcome younger clientele to Newhaven Court at Clearview as the senior living community provides “Back to School Haircuts” to school-aged children on Monday, Aug. 19.
Ray will provide the haircuts — by appointment only — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 724.477.8701 to make an appointment. A $10 donation will go toward a prize awarded to a nominated teacher/classroom.
“I’m excited to be a part of this event,” Ray said. “I know I’ll enjoy seeing the kiddos and hearing their stories about going back to school. I participated in a “Cut-A-Thon” in the late 1980’s when I worked at J.C. Penney Styling Salon. I’ve been a hairdresser at Newhaven Court at Clearview for almost three years. I’m also a seasonal RWA. The team here is amazing. Everyone is always upbeat, friendly and caring toward the staff.”
Each school-aged child receiving a haircut also will get one entry for a chance to win a “back-to-school” basket. The students also may nominate a teacher to be entered in a random drawing for a monetary donation to their respective classroom.
“Our Residents love Leslie,” said Krystle Pry, Executive Operations Officer at Newhaven Court at Clearview. “There is no doubt that hair days are important in our community. Leslie is so wonderful at adjusting her schedule and time for residents and their individual needs. She is also part of our Wellness Department and works as a Resident Wellness Associate.
“Leslie is always engaged and involved with happenings around the community, so it’s not surprising that she has volunteered to do this back-to-school themed event,” Pry said.
Pry and Ray each credited Newhaven Court at Clearview LifeStages Director Heather Allison for her role in putting together the back-to-school haircuts event.
“We have at least one fundraiser a month, and when we discussed ideas for the month of August, Heather and I thought a ‘Back-to-School’ theme would be appropriate,” Pry said. “She came up with the ‘haircuts’ idea and suggested we ask Leslie to volunteer.
“We also felt that by hosting this event we could show off our beautiful community and help our resident families who are just as busy as the rest of us and have to address some last minute, back-to-school items,” Pry said. “Everyone is feeling the pressure financially these days, so a $10 haircut might make the difference for a family with four kids. Plus, we have a chance to make a donation to a local classroom.”
In addition to a fresh haircut, each child will be entered into a drawing for a back-to-school gift basket. The donations collected will go towards a monetary gift for a randomly selected teacher, nominated by the children receiving haircuts. This thoughtful addition not only helps the students but also supports educators who often face challenges in acquiring necessary classroom supplies.
“I can’t imagine what some teachers go through on a daily basis, and I am sure there is always a need for additional supplies and resources,” Pry said. “I can still remember teachers that made an impact on me as a child, and I think this is a great way to give someone credit for the work they do.”
