CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — For Raymond and June Dalby, love has spanned oceans, challenges and decades. On August 27, the couple will celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 70 years of marriage.
Raymond, 93, and June, 92, first exchanged vows on August 27, 1955, at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Sheffield, England. As newlyweds in their mid-20s, they made the bold decision to leave behind everything they knew and immigrate to the United States in search of new opportunities. That leap of faith became the foundation of a life defined by resilience, partnership and devotion.
Their daughter, Jane Beaver, still marvels at her parents’ courage. “I am amazed at all they overcame,” she said. “The decision to leave everything and everyone they knew in their mid-20s and immigrate. They were just brave and together.”
In February, the Dalbys made Magnolias of Chambersburg their home. They were warmly welcomed and soon became cherished members within the senior living community.
“Their love is a daily reminder of what it means to truly walk through life side by side,” said Alyssa Culbertson, Community Relations Director at Magnolias of Chambersburg. “Although June’s memory has changed, her desire to be with her loved one remains at the forefront.”
“It has been a blessing to meet their individual needs while also bringing them together to celebrate such a special bond,” Culbertson added. “It is truly an honor to be part of this milestone and to share in the joy of such a remarkable couple and family.”
To mark the Dalbys’ platinum anniversary, the Magnolias of Chambersburg team has partnered with the family to host an intimate celebration with residents, staff, and loved ones. Special guest Pennsylvania State Rep. Rob Kauffman will present the couple with an official citation, even setting aside his own birthday to honor their incredible journey.
“Marriage is a foundation on which we’ve built our society, providing stability, support, and a framework for the flourishing of families,” Rep. Kauffman said. “Strong families contribute to the health and prosperity of our communities. So, it is a distinct honor to recognize Mr. and Mrs. Dalby in celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary! They have withstood the test of time and loved well!”
When asked about the secret to their long marriage, Raymond Dalby responded with his signature wit: “Life without parole.”
For those who know them best, that humor is just one of the qualities that has carried the Dalbys through seven decades of marriage, along with faith, perseverance and unconditional love.
“We are so grateful as caregivers to be able to celebrate their continued love story,” said Catherine Neil, Medication Associate at Magnolias of Chambersburg. “Their love continues to inspire their family, their caregivers and everyone fortunate enough to witness it.”
